Vaishno Devi – The Living Shaktipeeth of the Trikuta Hills
The cave temple of Vaishno Devi, located in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India. Every year, millions of pilgrims flock to this cave temple, wherein the living deity Mata Vaishno Devi is believed to grant the desires of her genuine devotees. The trek to this revered place of worship is a comfily, colorfully and spiritually enriching encounter with faith, love, and divine power.
The Legend of Mata Vaishno Devi
Hindu religion has it that, among the various deities, Mata Vaishno Devi represents Goddess Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati and Mahakali— the Supreme Goddess in her three forms of power. It is said that in the Treta Yuga, a little girl called Vaishnavi dedicated her life to fasting and prayer to be one with Lord Vishnu. When Bhairon Nath, the demon, tried to interrupt her meditation, she ran away to the mountains and finally found a cave in Trikuta Hills to hide.
Bhairon came after her and the Goddess showed her real power and killed him. But before the death, Bhairon realized his folly and sought pardon. Mata Vaishno Devi gave him her blessings and a place close to her sanctum, proclaiming that the pilgrimage of any worshiper would not be considered complete until they visited the Bhairon Temple.
Location and Altitude
The divine cave of Vaishno Devi is situated close to Katra town in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 5,200 feet above sea level, surrounded by beautiful hills and forests. The nearest large city is Jammu, which acts as the main hub of pilgrims heading to Katra.
The Holy Cave and Its Significance
In the holy cave of Vaishno Devi, there are no statues or mages of the Goddess. On the contrary, three rock formations called Pindis, which are the main three forms of the Goddess—Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati—are represented by the three Pindis. The Pindis are constantly interconnected with natural water which is a sign of purity and eternal power.
Mata Vaishno Devi is believed to occupy these holy Pindis and every worshipper with pure devotion who goes into the cave is blessed with her presence and grace.
The Vaishno Devi Yatra
The pilgrimage starts from Katra, a town of about 50 km away from Jammu. First, the pilgrims have to get a yatra slip from the Yatra Registration Counter at Katra, which is a prerequisite to move on to the shrine. The total uphill climb to the temple is approximately 13 kilometers from the initial point at Banganga.
In addition, there are numerous places to rest, stalls for drinks and snacks, and hospitals set up by the Shrine Board. The worshippers have the option to go by foot, by pony, palki, or electric vehicles for part of the traveling. Recently, helicopter services have gained a lot of popularity due to their speed and comfort in getting near the shrine.
Vaishno Devi Helicopter Service
Helicopter services are offered to those who do not want to spend much time on the trip from Katra to Sanjichhat which is around 2.5 km away from the temple. The total flying time is about 8 minutes, and after the devotees reach Sanjichhat, they can either walk or ride a pony to the temple. Helicopter tickets can be reserved in advance from the official Shrine Board website.
